A contraindication is a condition that inhibits massage of a specific area. A massage treatment is non-invasive and will benefit the body in many ways but it is important to be aware of conditions that massage may irritate or worsen, these conditions are split into three groups: Local, Medical and Total Contraindications.
Local Contraindications
These conditions affect small or localised areas of the body; in this case it is still possible for a person to benefit from massage as long as the specific area is avoided.

Sunburn | | Undiagnosed lumps/bumps |
Areas of undiagnosed pain (not aches or tensions) | | Skin diseases |
Pregnancy (GP approval required. A massage is only offered if GP confirms 16+ weeks of pregnancy) - the abdomen only has to be avoided | | Open cuts/abrasions/bruises |
The abdomen during the first few days of menstruation (dependent on consultation with the client) | | |
Medical contraindications:
These conditions require consent from your GP before a massage treatment plan can be implemented. It will be necessary for you to seek your GP's verbal consent to your receiving Swedish Massage. For insurance purposes, you will be required to sign a declaration stating that your GPs approval for this treatment has been sought and given.
